Robert Frederick Blum made many trips to Venice between 1880 and 1890, painting there with fellow artists James McNeill Whistler, William Merritt Chase, and John Henry Twachtman. The San Trovaso Quarter, near the famous Accademia gallery, housed many artists' studios. The water in the foreground and the painting's vertical format suggest that the viewer is in a boat about to enter the narrow canal ahead. |
