What a Pretty Penumbra!
Tonight, in the midst of a full moon, there will be a total lunar eclipse.Artist Albert Pinkham Ryder, known for his ethereal, visionary paintings of both land and sea, would have enjoyed tonight's full moon.
Ryder painted Moonlight while on an ocean voyage from New York to England in 1887. During the trip, Ryder spent a great deal of time observing the effects of moonlight on the water. His interest in creating this painted effect resulted in the moonlit seascape becoming a recurring theme in Ryder's complex oeuvre.
