From China with Love

Giant Panda
On this date in 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon and Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai released the Shanghai Communiqué.

With this document the two countries began normalizing diplomatic relations. Two months later, as a gesture of friendship, the Chinese government gave the United States two giant pandas, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing. The adorable creatures were star attractions at the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park.

If you visit the National Zoo now, you can see two new pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian! To view more eye-catching artworks, visit our virtual exhibition Posters American Style.
