End of Winter

End of Winter
John Henry Twachtman depicts the passing of a season in this ethereal painting.

End of Winter is one of the artist's loveliest and, despite the muted palette, most varied winter scenes. The composition is subtle, featuring the delicate network of barren trees, receding diagonal of the brook, and stabilizing anchor of farm buildings at the horizon. The palette is enchanting, its blended strokes ranging from yellow and cream to gray and violet, with touches of pale green. With brook water flowing from the thaw, while snow and ice still lie on the banks, the painting is redolent of approaching spring.
