Seafood Buffet
The Maine Lobster Festival takes place today in Rockland, Maine.
Join this annual celebration and promotion of the lobster industry in Harbor Park from July 31 through August 4.
Did you guess that this artwork was painted by a native of MaineMarsden Hartley? Although he left that state to attend the Chase School in New York City in 1898, he returned to Maine in the summers, where he painted the mountainous landscapes in a post-impressionist style.
Perhaps Hartley took his state's motto"Dirigo," Latin for "I lead"to heart. Art historians agree that his later work, including this painting, reveals a style exclusively his own. Images of death and the sea became prevalent as the artist neared the end of his life.
