Football Player (The Lineman)
The first night football game was played on September 28, 1892.

William Zorach, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania, shows his appreciation of a very American game in this sculpture. Zorach's lineman, muscular yet thoughtful, composed yet ready to spring to action, resembles the noble athletes of classical Greek sculptures. Zorach's paintings are generally known for their bold, semiabstract approach to color and composition, but his style in this work is more conservative.
