"Treasures to Go" Will Soon Hit the Hay!
In one of its last venues, American Impressionism: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum opens today at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia.
Then it goes to one more city, San Antonio, Texas, before the artworks come home for a rest. Catch it while you can, either in Norfolk, San Antonio, or online!
American Impressionism features about fifty luminous works by turn-of-the century painters who often worked outdoors to capture brilliant effects of light and color. Among many enchanting landscapes is Arthur Wesley Dow's The Hill Field.
Dow often depicted the countryside around his birthplace, Ipswich, Massachusetts, and throughout his life he returned to this small New England town to paint and teach. Although better known for his Japanese-inspired work, Dow experimented with a variety of styles and media. Here he tried his hand at impressionism, perhaps influenced by several years of study in France.
