Aw Shucks,
It's Oyster Season!
Celebrate open season for this saltwater delicacy and honor a traditional way of life for Chesapeake watermen! Attend the St. Mary's County Oyster Festival, October 19 and 20 at the county fairgrounds near Leonardtown, Maryland.
Eat your oysters fried, stewed, scalded, and nude! Witness the National Oyster Shucking Championship, where presentation matters as well as speed. Check out the competition in the Oyster Cookoff. Learn new ways to serve this aphrodisiac at cooking demonstrations led by previous cookoff Grand Champions and local chefs. If you are really keen, you can purchase a cookbook full of recipes from previous winners!
In addition to oysters, try local specialties such as Southern Maryland stuffed ham, soft-shell crabs, crab cakes, and crab soup. Catherine Howell's Oyster Shuckers can transport you to Leonardtown, whether you attend the festival or not!
