"Yule" Light a Candle
Winter solstice takes place in the Northern Hemisphere today at 8:14 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, ushering in the new season.
Gather around the yule log and celebrate the shortest day of the year with hot drinks and storytelling! In pagan traditions, Yule marks the death of the sun god and the birth of the earth goddess.
The woodcut Winternight by Werner Drewes conveys both the primal darkness of winter solstice as well as the hope, warmth, and peace suggested by yule logs, candles, and other winter symbols of light.
