Playing Favorites

Last month we asked our virtual visitors to tell us who their favorite artists are. Here is one response . . .

A virtual visitor from Maryland wrote: "I'd like to vote for George Tooker as one of my favorite American artists . . . . My attraction stems in part from the unusual and unexplained scenarios in the paintings—created in part by his eerily luminous color choices—that spark my imagination, causing me conjure up stories to explain the strange goings on."

This painting by George Tooker from the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection is titled In the Summerhouse. Hmm, what are they doing in there?
