Cape Cod Morning, painted in 1950, depicts a woman, seemingly trapped in a bay window with tall dark shutters, leaning urgently forward as she spies something beyond the picture's edge. We cannot see the object of her gaze, and she cannot see us watching her. Hopper's play of inside and outside, seen and unseen, hints at larger issues of isolation and freedom.
