Birth of Our National Anthem
"Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light
"On the night of September 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key witnessed the British attack on Ft. McHenry, in Baltimore Harbor. He awoke the next morning to see the country's flag still proudly flying and was inspired to write the verse that became our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," in 1931.
The actual flag that inspired Key is in the collection of the National Museum of American History and is currently undergoing a fascinating restoration.
