Art and Music: Mutual Muses

The Lesson
The sweet sounds of music will fill the air today at 3 P.M. in the Renwick's Grand Salon.

A concert of American musical works inspired by traditional themes will be performed today at the Renwick Gallery by the faculty of the Selma Levine School of Music. Today's musicians will surely be inspired when they gaze upon Hugo Ballin's painting titled The Lesson.

This work is one of more than 150 nineteenth-century paintings on display in the recently refurbished Grand Salon. Custom-made draperies, a state-of-the art lighting system, and gilded frieze elements help to re-create the elegant setting of a nineteenth-century collector's picture gallery.

The Renwick Gallery is located at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, across from the White House.
