Taxi!

Dowager in a Wheelchair
In 1907, the first gasoline-powered taxicabs with mechanical meters hit the streets of New York City.

Now there are more than 10,000 taxis operating in the Big Apple.

This painting by Philip Evergood depicts a bustling New York City street scene, complete with taxis!

Born in New York and educated in England, Evergood returned to New York City in 1923 and studied at the Art Students League. Some art historians describe Evergood as a Magic Realist because his work, while rooted in everyday life, includes elements of fantasy.
