Carmen Lomas Garza was born to a Mexican American family in Kingsville, Texas. Her paintings focus on joyful memories of everyday life with her family as well as community festivals and events.

Carmen painted Camas para Sueños (Beds for Dreams) in 1985. It shows Carmen and her sister on the roof, while their mother makes a bed. The young girls look out at the night sky and dream of becoming artists.
