Childe at Art
Impressionist Childe Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on this day in 1859.Few American painters have been as critically acclaimed and successful during their lifetime as Hassam. He was one of the earliest importers of French impressionism into this country, beginning in 1889, during a period in which many Americans looked once more to Europe for cultural inspiration.
Hassam's success in transplanting the themes and style of Monet and Renoir to America can be judged from Up the River, Late Afternoon, October.
