Just Say "No"

Untitled (No), from the Untitled Portfolio
Contemporary artist Barbara Kruger encourages assertiveness with today's bold artwork.

Kruger's background in magazine publishing is evident in her signature works. Untitled (No) is typical in that she often pairs a found black and white photograph with a slogan that raises issues of feminism, power, consumerism, and desire. Kruger mimics the design of magazine advertisements and billboards, but questions the social values that those forms usually promote.

Untitled (No) is image number three in a nine-piece series of lithographs that reads "We Will No Longer Be Seen and Not Heard."
