McEvoy Auditorium, Lower LevelAmerican Art Museum Collectors Roundtable opens doors to the exciting world of art collecting. These special sessions provide a forum for experienced private collectorsand those just starting to collectto learn from acclaimed experts. All lectures begin at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Collecting Outside the Canon Walter O. Evans Collector of African American art Walter O. Evans, is one of the country's foremost collectors of African American art. Dr. Evans, a retired surgeon, made his first major purchase in 1979a portfolio of serigraphs by Jacob Lawrence entitled The Legend of John Brown. This purchase was to be the beginning of a collection which has expanded to more than 500 paintings, sculptures and photographs representing the works of both 19th century and contemporary African American artists, including Romare Bearden, Edward Bannister, Elizabeth Catlett, Robert Duncanson, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Henry O. Tanner, and many others. His collection is an expression of his commitment to the importance of cultural heritage and family tradition. Approximately 80 pieces from his collection were selected and assembled for a traveling exhibition of African American art, which began in 1991 and traveled continuously until 2007. The exhibition has been exhibited in more than 45 museums and university galleries in the U.S. Other lectures in this series includes: Collecting Photographs Tuesday, March 24 Keith Davis, curator of photography, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art American Picture Frames: Choices by Artists and Collectors Tuesday, April 28 Carrie Rebora Barratt, curator of American paintings and sculpture, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Collecting Outside the Canon Tuesday, May 19 Dr. Walter O.
