This sculpture is named for a famous late twelfth-century Japanese samurai warrior who, after personal tribulations, withdrew from the world to live as a hermit deep in the mountains outside Kyoto. The artist has interpreted this figure as a dark, solitary, and meditative sculpture, made from a tree trunk.
