Hot I worked on the print Hot at the same time as I was producing Fox. Both images were created in Chicago though they derive from sites in Southern California. I was living in London and would fly back to the U.S. to collaborate with printmakers. This particular image, though it may seem fairly simple in coloristic terms, is actually made up of seventeen separate plates used to apply seventeen separate colors. I see this sign as an iconic representation of the energy of America's downtown areas during the midtwentieth century. To explore how artists often incorporate small modifications, unexpected views and angles, and skillful manipulations of light that go well beyond faithful recordings of reality, see More to It! |
