"Age cannot wither her, not custom stale -- W. Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra, Act II, sc. 2Until quite recently, The Death of Cleopatra was presumed lost or destroyed. The sculpture was exhibited to great acclaim at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 and at the Chicago Interstate Industrial Exposition in 1878. Cleopatra was then placed in storage, and what happened next is unclear. In 1892 Monumental News reported its appearance in a Clark Street Saloon in Chicago.
