One of the themes promoted by the Works Progress Administration in its writers' and artists' projects was the rediscovery of American regional landscapes. At the same time, New Deal agencies exhorted Americans to exercise and to engage in outdoor activity in an effort to improve public health. Rural New York State, with its facilities for winter recreation and sport, offered a wholesome antidote to urban environments.
