Peter Max brings an exotic mixture of influences to his graphic design, from his childhood in China to his sense of the psychedelic. For From the Moon, diverse factors play into the celebration of this "other worldly" event—the race to the moon by two world powers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union, won in dramatic fashion by the United States in 1969.

Biography of Peter Max
Shortly after Peter Max was born in Berlin, his family moved to Shanghai, where he spent the first ten years of his life. A visually sensitive child, Max speaks of having been dramatically affected by the world that surrounded him in Shanghai. Particularly evocative was the ritualistic painting in a Buddhist temple near his home, especially its use of long, spontaneous brushstrokes. Just as important were the rich sights and sounds of Shanghai's streets and festivals.
After leaving Shanghai, Max lived for periods of time in the mountains of Tibet and also in Israel and Paris before settling in New York in the early 1950s. He incorporated all of these sources into his art, eventually creating a unique personal language that has earned him important commissions and exhibitions on three continents.
