Biography of Seymour Chwast

Educated at Cooper Union in New York City, Seymour Chwast was a founding member of the important Push Pin Studios and Push Pin Press. Prolific and versatile, he has executed designs for posters, magazines, commercial logos, and record covers, as well as children's books.

Chwast has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, and his work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Suntory Museum in Osaka. In 1983 he was awarded the Saint-Gaudens Medal for outstanding achievement by Cooper Union, and was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Art Directors Club of New York.

Because of the remarkable diversity of Chwast's talent, his work has had an international influence on designers in various fields. He played a key role in creating Push Pin Studios' distinctive style, which revived the illustrative elements of earlier art movements such as Art Nouveau. This eclecticism was well suited to the 1960s and 1970s, and his visual humor continues to distinguish Push Pin's efforts.
