With giant-like rapidity [the daguerreotype] has taken with boldest strides a foremost place in practical excellence and when it is recollected, that, but a few years back, that which was but a useless toy in the hands of a scientific amateur, has become the means of livelihood to tens of thousands, and the product the elegant companion of the parlour and boudoir,---what then, may not be expected of an art which has such ready-made excellence?
