Kingston, New York, became a major railroad center in the nineteenth century, its freight cars carrying the cement, bricks, and bluestone needed to build towns throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond. Mecklem used smoky grays and reds and an encompassing view to show this vast complex of heavy industry as a symbol of strength in a time of economic depression.
