In 1896, Bessie Price joined other members of her Irish family working in the Thayer household. She became a model for several of Thayer's best-known paintingsA Young Woman(1898) and the Stevenson Memorial(1903)both in this exhibition. This first portrait of her, reminiscent of Italian Renaissance examples, won the prestigious Thomas B. Clarke prize at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1898. |
