Check out the renovation of our grand building in this slide show feature!
The National Historic Landmark building that has been home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery since 1968 is being meticulously restored to its nineteenth-century splendor. Collectively, the two museums and their activities are known as the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. When the Donald W. Reynolds Center opens July 1, 2006, visitors will have a completely new experience.
All three floors will be devoted to exhibition and public space for permanent collection installations and temporary special exhibitions, as well as museum stores. The museums will share three significant new spaces: the Lunder Conservation Center, a unique art conservation facility that allows the public the opportunity to view conservators at work through floor-to-ceiling glass walls; the state-of-the-art Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium; and the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, a signature space designed by Norman Foster of Foster and Partners. In addition, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will debut its new visible storage galleries in the Luce Foundation Center for American Art.
Visit the slide show for a virtual tour of the renovation in progress.
