William H. Johnson Slide Show

"William H. Johnson's World on Paper"

Preview our special exhibition William H. Johnson's World on Paper in this slide show.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds the largest and most complete collection of work by the African American modernist William H. Johnson. William H. Johnson's World on Paper thoroughly examines, for the first time, the artist's printmaking. These never-before-exhibited prints reveal Johnson's work in graphic media to be as powerful as that in oils and tempera. Here the artist's distinctive bold compositions and bright colors are evident. Because he studied and lived in Europe, Johnson's woodcuts were strongly influenced by German expressionist art.
