Charles Fraser practiced law from 1808 until 1817, before taking up painting. He was the leading miniaturist in Charleston before the Civil War, producing more than five hundred portraits as well as a number of landscape paintings. Based in Charleston his entire life, he also traveled widely along the eastern seaboard, heading north during the summer months and south as the seasons changed.
