Biography

James P. Smith taught and painted in Philadelphia between 1824 and 1850. He worked on improving his own technique by studying and making copies of the “fancy subjects” painted by other artists, and made miniatures of George Washington. Smith’s portraits were commended for capturing the true character of his sitters.
