Artwork Description

Paul Manship created several medals of artists such as this one showing painter John C. Johansen (1876-1964), who was born in Denmark and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Johansen established his reputation as a painter of tonalist and impressionist landscapes. On the reverse, Manship dedicated the medal to Johansen in friendship, as he had done for many painters and sculptors throughout his career.
