2000-2002 Jamie Bennett Born: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1948 18k gold, sterling silver, and enamel 22 1/2 in. x 1 in. diam. (57.3 x 2.5 cm) Smithsonian American Art Museum Gift of Ina and Jack Kay 2003.46 Not currently on view

Jurjani #7 alludes to the traditions of Islamic ornamentation and also shows Jamie Bennett’s interest in the enamel reliquaries and tiled naves of Byzantine churches. Al-Jurjani was the name of two Arab intellectuals: one was an eleventh-century grammarian and philosopher, the other a fifteenth-century Islamic theologian. The title of this necklace likely refers to one or both of these medieval scholars.
