Artwork Description
Henry Dropsy’s medal honors Russian artist and archaeologist Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947). Roerich’s most notable achievement was the Roerich Pact, known informally as the Red Cross of Culture, which declared that all historic monuments, museums, and cultural and scientific institutions be considered neutral and protected in times of war and peace. Twenty-one nations agreed to the pact in a ceremony at the White House in 1935.
