Artwork Description

Francis Davis Millet’s Room Interior with Winding Staircase shows an empty room in an undetermined location. The blurred shadows and rounded, imperfect lines stress the openness of this uninhabited corner. Millet’s artwork was popular abroad, notably in England, where he settled in the village of Broadway. He painted many English interior scenes, highly finished works that often featured local characters and heavily researched costumes. Room Interior with Winding Staircase, however, exhibits how he also studied the buildings and rooms themselves throughout his career.
