Return to Aztlán: Chicano identity and Aztec mythology
Would you expect that stories from two thousand years ago would be relevant today? Many Mexican American artists of the last forty years include references to Aztec myths in their work. In this multidisciplinary lesson, your students will explore this connection between contemporary and ancient times and the ways in which cultural movements create identity through iconography. The study of identity is particularly relevant to adolescents. Many kinds of activities—including creative writing, discussion, concept-mapping, and art making—are interwoven to engage the class.
