Jane Edna Hunter

Jane Edna Hunter Jane Edna Hunter (1882–1971) dedicated her life to improving the lives of African American women. She saw the need for a place to house and protect black women who moved from the rural South to northern cities looking for work. Hunter believed that these young women needed training and guidance to help prepare them for the challenges they would encounter while living on their own. In 1921, with financial assistance from the Phillis Wheatly Association, Hunter established a successful lodging facility and work placement center for young African-American women in Cleveland, Ohio. Hunter's facility became a model for similar projects in urban areas across the country.
