The War Effort

Off to War

Off
Johnson and his Danish wife, Holcha, were deeply concerned about World War II. Two years after they left Scandinavia, Denmark was occupied by German troops. Holcha's family suffered under the occupation for five years until the end of the war brought relief. Johnson's painting Off to War shows a scenario that was reenacted all around the United States as eligible men enlisted in the armed services.

LOOK! THINK! IMAGINE!

Johnson is telling us a story in this painting. Can you tell what that story is? What details help you to identify what is happening in the scene? If you are unable to figure it out, look at the title of the painting. Titles are often clues that help you discover what works of art are about.
