Ral's

RalsBoth of these images were printed from the same three-hundred-pound lithographic stone. This four inch thick limestone is periodically hauled to my studio by the master printer, Randy Folkman of Connecticut's Lonetown Press. Once I've drawn an image on its surface, the stone is returned to his print studio, where it is proofed and editioned.

We've performed this routine for years on a number of prints, usually producing two small editions each time: one created as a two-color version, printed in black with a subtle buff undertone as the second color; the other as a full color version, printed first in black only, then painted by hand in watercolor.

I was told by a fellow printmaker after doing my first handcolored print that adding watercolor to a lithograph is impossible since "oil and water don't mix." (Lithographic ink is oil based.) Happily, because I forged ahead unaware of any limitations, I proved my friend incorrect. Ral's (color) Ral's (b&w)
