Three Acrobats
on a Unicycle

1957
Chaim Gross

bronze
one of five casts by the Bedi-Rassey Foundry
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Renee and Chaim Gross

Although modeled in plaster and cast in bronze, this sculpture retains the columnar character of Gross's wood carvings with similar themes. However, in their openness and expansion into space his figures here suggest a new freedom in contrast to the compressed nature of his wood carvings. The extension of the ponytail and the left leg of the top acrobat would have been considered too likely to break in a wood version. The simplified, cubistic form of the figures in this bronze is characteristic of the works that Gross first constructed in plaster.
