Chaim Gross

pencil on paper
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation

Gross executed two carvings entitled Judith. He made this preliminary drawing for the second, which was realized in teakwood five years later. Although the outlines of the forms are very curvilinear, in its overall composition the sculptor has kept in mind the rectangular format of the block of wood to be carved.
