This sketch and another entitled Welders 2 constituted the second set of drawings that Chaim Gross submitted for review by the Section of Painting and Sculpture. In response the Section wanted more finished drawings that incorporated several suggestions.
"It was suggested that instead of doing a pair of welders that you consider doing a riveter and his assistant. It would make for an equally interesting composition and the action of riveting has stronger possibilities, we think, than the welding. Compositionally, we thought that your figures were too compressed toward the center of the design."
