A gift from the Dominion Foundation's predecessor, the CNG Foundation, enabled the museum to acquire more than 300 contemporary landscape photographs by fifty photographers nationwide. The photographs were selected by Merry A. Foresta, the museum's senior curator of photography. Based on this collection, and with the Foundation's support, the museum was able to organize the 1992 exhibition and catalog Between Home and Heaven: Contemporary American Landscape Photography. The Dominion Foundation continues to support Smithsonian American Art Museum Photography and New Media programs by sponsoring the New Century/New Media Award. James C. Mesloh, executive director of the Dominion Foundation
Celebrating
the 10th anniversary of the museum's photography collection, the Foundation
established the Annual Contemporary American Landscape Photography Award
in 1994. In honor of this outstanding support, the Smithsonian American
Art Museum presented the prestigious James Smithson Bicentennial Medal
to George A. Davidson, Jr., who recently retired as Dominion chairman.
