The Dominion Foundation

Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Dominion Foundation have created a public-private partnership dedicated to preserving America's visual heritage through collecting, preserving, and studying photographs. An initial gift and pledge in the amount of $250,000 launched this multiyear program in 1987 and supports a full range of endeavors, from acquisitions to research, publications, exhibitions, and new media projects.

We are proud of our collaborative relationship with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in preserving and presenting the heritage of the United States through photography. Knowing that our involvement has helped build a significant record of the American experience as part of our national collection is extremely gratifying.

Elizabeth Broun, director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum

This exciting partnership opens a world of opportunities to showcase the many ways photography captures and documents our nation's heritage. Dominion has helped us create a model that we want to develop for other museum programs.

A gift from the Dominion Foundation's predecessor, the CNG Foundation, enabled the museum to acquire more than 300 contemporary landscape photographs by fifty photographers nationwide. The photographs were selected by Merry A. Foresta, the museum's senior curator of photography. Based on this collection, and with the Foundation's support, the museum was able to organize the 1992 exhibition and catalog Between Home and Heaven: Contemporary American Landscape Photography.

The Dominion Foundation continues to support Smithsonian American Art Museum Photography and New Media programs by sponsoring the New Century/New Media Award.

Now through the Internet, we look forward to bringing the face of America, through these superb photographic images, to a global audience.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the museum's photography collection, the Foundation established the Annual Contemporary American Landscape Photography Award in 1994. In honor of this outstanding support, the Smithsonian American Art Museum presented the prestigious James Smithson Bicentennial Medal to George A. Davidson, Jr., who recently retired as Dominion chairman.

As I look to the future of our photography program, it is liberating to know that with the Dominion Foundation we have the support of a very engaged partner who shares the museum's vision of the important role photography plays in American art.
