DeCarava singled out one young woman rather than taking in the vast numbers of people who participated in the historic march on Washington. The shoulder-length closeup emphasizes her sober determination as an individual demonstrating on behalf of Civil Rights. In her individuality she also stands for the many, suggested here by the patches of white shirts that surround her.
