William H. Johnson

An African American family travels the road between the two mainstays of their life—hard work on the farm pictured to the right and spiritual support from the church seen at the left. Survival through faith and family is the clear message from an artist who wanted “to express in a natural way what I feel, what is in me, both rhythmically and spiritually, all that which in time has been saved up in my family of primitiveness and tradition.”
