Paul Cadmus

Male Nude (#179)
crayon and acrylic
24 5/8 x 17 11/16 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Sara Roby Foundation

The model for this powerful drawing was dancer Jon Andersson, whom Cadmus drew regularly over several years. Andersson himself suggested the poses, which often presented challenges of depicting torsion and foreshortening. Cadmus emphasized the sculptural solidity of the model's muscular anatomy and placed the figure in a severely restricted space, recalling some of Michelangelo's drawings for the Sistine Chapel.
