Louis Lozowick

Stage Setting for "Gas"
1926
pen and ink, brush and ink, tempera, and pencil
19 5/16 x 12 3/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum purchase

Gas is an expressionist, World War I drama about a rebellion at a plant producing poison gas. Lozowick's interest in machine imagery landed him the commission to design the stage set. While the stark, black lines and shapes of this drawing suggest metallic machinery, the actual set was built of wood.
