David T. Hanson

Coal Storage Area and Railroad Tipple. October 1984, from the series Colstrip, Montana 1982-1985
Ektacolor print
11 x 14 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Consolidated Natural Gas Company Foundation

Touches of color lead our eye through this bleak unpopulated scene from the foreground shack to the “tipple” at the picture’s center where freight cars dump coal for storage. Hanson’s photographs of “working landscapes” critique man’s impact on the land.
