Close examination of this photograph reveals the silvery, elevated pipeline nearly hidden amidst the profusion of a young birch forest and sunlit grasses. This controversial artery that carries oil from Alaska’s North Slope to Prince William Sound and, eventually, the lower forty-eight states, ironically appears to cohabit with nature and even to disappear within it.
