Grace M. Ballentine

Up from the Sea
about 1940
gelatin silver print
14 x 16 7/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Dr. Robert M. Ballentine

Grace Ballentine was first drawn to photography as illustrations for her own horticultural lectures. The point of view of this image, taken from the base of the dunes, makes the ripples in the sand appear to mirror the waves of the sea itself.
